How do celebrities influence kids?

Posted in
by Admin

With Britney Spears in the news lately — for everything from shaving her head to losing custody of her kids — along with her little sister Jamie Lynn, Nickelodeon's "Zoey 101" star, for being pregnant at 16, you can't help but wonder, how do kids who idolize these people respond to their troublemaking behavior?

A report in the May 21, 2006 issue of USA Weekend revealed that 60 percent of teens wanted to get a tattoo or piercing in the same place a celebrity has one. Half of them agreed that their peers smoke or drink because they see their idols doing it and 77 percent think that after a star loses weight, teenagers are likely to do the same. Thirteen percent of teens in the survey admitted to dieting to make them look more like a celebrity.

"Kids look up to celebrities, and when they see them doing bad things, kids think it's okay," said Alyssa Garcia-LaFavor of Sheboygan Falls Middle School.

Kids who remember idolizing the sweet, innocent Lindsey Lohan from her younger roles in "The Parent Trap" and "Freaky Friday" might get the idea that drugs and drinking and driving is fine to do, since Lohan got into two car accidents, was arrested twice and went to rehab two different times. However, out of all of that, she only had to serve 84 minutes in jail.

The loose punishments celebrities receive might be telling kids that if they get involved with drugs or drinking, the consequences won't be that bad.

On the other hand, Paris Hilton was sentenced to 45 days for a probation violation, involving her alcohol-related driving offense. After she was released though, she said she'd do more charity work. And she has been keeping her word, being spotted at a charity event for children with spinal cord injuries, according to PEOPLE magazine.

The USA Weekend report also stated that 52 percent of teens feel that celebrities use fundraisers as a way of self-promotion. We saw right through that, Paris.

Vanessa Hudgens, 19, a "High School Musical" star had some dirty laundry aired with nude photos of her being made public, when they were supposedly intended for her boyfriend Zac Efron's eyes only.

Celebrities that get in trouble are also an eye opener to some kids on what not to do with their lives.

"I feel bad for them because they decided to make that choice and hope they get help," said Nicole Bartel, of Sheboygan Falls Middle School.

"I think they should grow up and get a life," said Garcia-LaFavor.

Hollywood's not all bad.

Stars like Miley Cyrus, 15, (aka Hannah Montana) are making a major splash in the world of kids for their amazing talents and parents like them because they're someone kids can look up to.

Bartels said she idolizes Miley Cyrus, "because she doesn't get involved with the bad crowd and get in trouble. She's a good influence on kids."

She recently got a taste of what not to do as a star though.

A picture of her and another girl at a sleepover, where it looked like they were kissing (although they were actually exchanging a piece of candy), was leaked and Cyrus received some negative press for it.

But she handled it like a positive celebrity, saying that it was just a picture of two girls goofing off at a sleepover. Kudos to her.

Garcia-LaFavor named the Jonas Brothers, Carrie Underwood and Oprah as people she admires. She likes Oprah because "she helps kids out around the world and opened a school in Africa for girls."

The Disney Channel has helped shape other teen's positive careers, such as the Jonas Brothers, Zac Efron (although Vanessa might not be a great influence on him) and Ashley Tisdale.

"I'm happy Zac Efron and Hannah Montana are positive influences for kids," said Lynn Rousse, owner of Surprises, a shop that sells life-size cutouts of celebrities. "Our best seller is Zac Efron; a lot of girls had him in their bedroom for Christmas," she added.

"The Jonas Brothers are good influences because they're good singers and their music isn't trashy. Some of it is Christian which is good," said Garcia-LaFavor.

Goes to show that you can have great music, be a good influence and have practically every girl drooling over you.

Celebrities can be good influences on kids if they make the right choices. Today's famous people who have messed up lives still have a chance to turn their life around, like Drew Barrymore, who struggled with alcohol and drug addiction in her later childhood years. At age 14, she turned her life around and today she's made a ton of movies and even started her own production company.

Kids mold themselves around the people they admire and sometimes celebrities might not be the best people to look up to. Celebrities don't always make the best choices, but would you want people knowing about your every move?

Naked Britney Spears Shocks Shoppers

Britney Spears stunned sales staff at a Betsey Johnson store in Sherman Oaks, California on Sunday (13Jan08) when she stepped out of a fitting room completely naked.

A day before Spears' bizarre antics outside a Los Angeles courthouse cost her visitation rights to her young son for a month, the singer was stripping in front of shoppers.

Spears and her paparazzi boyfriend Adnan Ghalib caused a stir at the upmarket store upon their arrival, and as trendy shoppers watched, Spears grabbed a Betsey Johnson dress and took it to a fitting room.

But when she re-appeared, she wasn't wearing the dress or what she had on when she entered the store.

One store employee who witnessed Spears' shocking display tells Life & Style magazine, "I was blown away. Britney's private parts were right in front of me! "I grabbed a dress to cover her and she screamed, 'Get away from me! Don't you f**king come near me!'" Witnesses allege Spears and Ghalib then spent more than 30 minutes alone in one of the store's fitting rooms before the singer stumbled out, mumbling unintelligibly.

Another employee says, "I couldn't understand a word she was saying. She was slurring and spitting, and talking with a British accent... I wanted to help her, but she was so mean that I left her alone".

The bizarre scene at Betsey Johnson came during a weekend when Spears was spotted out and about with her new man, wearing one of the dresses she wore when she wed Kevin Federline in 2004.

She returned to the area after her bizarre Los Angeles Superior Court antics on Monday (14Jan08) for more craziness - she took an army of paparazzi into a nearby church and insisted on sitting in silence for just over two minutes.

Johnny Depp's £1m gift for Great Ormond Street Hospital

johnny depp

Johnny Depp yesterday made a secret visit to Great Ormond Street Hospital, where his daughter was treated, and donated £1million.

The Hollywood star’s eight-year-old Lily-Rose was rushed there last year when her kidneys failed following E.coli poisoning.

Depp’s surprise arrival at the London hospital comes after he invited five of its doctors and nurses to the London premiere of his latest film, winner of the Golden Globe for best musical, Sweeney Todd.

On November 29 he also spent four hours at the hospital reading stories to the children, dressed as Captain Jack Sparrow from Pirates of the Caribbean.

Apparently, he had his costume flown over from America especially.

It was while Depp was filming Tim Burton’s adaptation of Sweeney Todd – for which he won best actor in a musical at the Golden Globes - in the UK last March that his daughter fell ill.

The family, including the actor’s long-term girlfriend Vanessa Paradis, 34, and son Jack John, 6, were staying in a rented mansion in Surrey, which is where Lily-Rose is thought to have contracted the E.coli bug.

At one point it was feared she might not live.

Depp, 43, later commented: “It was the most frightening thing we have ever been through. It was hell.

“But the magic is that she pulled through beautifully. Great Ormond Street was terrific, a great hospital.”

The donation will be much welcomed by the hospital, which needs £170million to re-develop parts of the site. Disney are said to be donating £10million.

Meanwhile US film director Burton has revealed he is finally thinking about tying the knot with actress girlfriend Helena Bonham Carter, who stars alongside Depp in Sweeney Todd.

The couple have been together for seven years and have two children together.

Hilary Duff is a self-confessed "murderer".

The animal-loving singer confessed she accidentally killed her pet hermit crab when she was younger after leaving him out in the sun.

Hilary said: "When I was young, I was given a hermit crab. Its shell was painted with spots. I left him outside to get some sun, but when I picked him up the next day, he'd jellified. It was disgusting. I'm a murderer!"

The 20-year-old star - who has four pet dogs - also revealed she is such a fan of pooches she would be happiest living in a "weird house full of dogs".

She said: "I'm one of those crazy dog people! If I could I would live on a huge ranch with lots of dogs.

"I'd be so happy. People would say, 'Whatever happened to Hilary Duff?' And others would say, 'Oh, she lives in the weird house with all the dogs.'"

Hilary also admitted she once splashed out $200 on a parka coat for her Chihuahua Lola and spends a fortune taking her beloved dogs everywhere she goes.

Paris Hilton has been spotted pulling another publicity stunt with an engagement ring on her finger.

The socialite was spotted flashing a snake-shaped diamond ring after dining out with friends in Beverly Hills last night.

An onlooker revealed, “Paris was getting a lot of attention and was really showing off her engagement finger to photographers. I’ve not seen anything like it before. It was very unusual.”

But if the engagement ring is for real, then who exactly would Paris be heading up the aisle with?

The hotel heiress had appeared to have rekindled her relationship with model and pizza boy Alex Vaggo before Christmas, however here she is pictured out and about with a mystery dark-haired man.

Meanwhile, Paris Hilton was seen at the Cut restaurant last night, where the Cruises spent three hours dining together after the premiere of Katie’s new film “Mad Money”.

The trio is not known to be friends, but Hollywood’s a small town, and they’re sure to have crossed paths before.

In any case, it appeared to more than a coincidence that Paris was in attendance at the Cut restaurant in Beverly Hills where the world’s most famous Scientologist and his young wife were dining.

Hollywood’s first couple were said to have spent three hours at the restaurant, but they emerged alone, and Paris was seen leaving separately.

I fear my friend Britney will kill herself

Posted in
by .

She's had the worst week of her life. Now, as she goes on the run with a photographer who once stalked her, an insider who knows her well reveals she's been fighting manic depression for a year...

The young woman was adamant: "They're not sending me to the nut house," she shouted into her mobile phone.

"No one can make me go if I don't want to go, and I ain't goin'."

It was last Tuesday evening and Britney Spears was talking to a close friend as she cruised down Sunset Boulevard in her black sports car, followed by the swarm of paparazzi that pursues her everywhere she goes.

As the friend tried to reason with the star, her words - and her driving - became increasingly erratic.

"See that? I just went through another stop sign," Britney shrieked. "See what you made me do? I'm gonna hurt someone out here!"

Then the 26-year-old made a chilling promise: "I'll kill myself before I let them lock me up again. So tell Mama and Daddy I said so!"

Just before she hung up, she uttered a final few words.

And as someone who has known and liked Britney for almost a decade, I find what she had to say utterly chilling.

"Oh my God," she moaned. "It's over for me."

In one short week, it seems, Britney's life has become a living nightmare, turning a troubled young star into a woman on the brink of insanity.

The crisis began last weekend, when a four-hour police stand-off at her Los Angeles home over custody of her two young children ended with Britney being strapped to an ambulance trolley and dragged off to the mental ward of a hospital.

As a result, she's been stripped of all custody of her children.

Meanwhile, her frantic parents are racking their brains, trying to figure out how to have their tormented young daughter formally committed to an institution.

And to add to the mess, a British paparazzo whom Britney has just taken into her confidence - and her bed - has already betrayed that trust in the most sordid way.

For several years, Adnan Ghalib has been one of the many photographers who earns a wage simply by following Britney Spears's every move.

Originally from Afghanistan, he moved with his family to London in 1977 as a five-year-old refugee, later settling in California, where he managed a strip bar before branching out as a paparazzo.

Though married, he's been separated from his wife, Azlynn Berry, for about a year.

So how did this 35-year-old low-life end up sleeping with the star he was stalking?

"Britney has been slipping off to hotels and spending the night with this guy for a couple of weeks now," says one disgusted friend of the singer.

"It started on December 23 when they spent the night together at the Peninsula in Beverly Hills. He's a creepy guy.

"He always said he would one day get Britney Spears in the sack, and I guess he finally has. She's giddy when she's around him. But I think he's out to use her."

Quite so. For on Wednesday, Britney learned that Ghalib had been attempting to sell pictures of Britney wearing only her knickers.

The asking price? A million dollars, cash.

He has now reportedly settled for a little more than £25,000 from an Australian magazine.

Given such a betrayal, one would think Britney would be outraged. But far from it. At the time of writing, Ghalib was still by her side.

On Wednesday, the pair boarded a private jet, heading for Mexico, arriving back in LA on Thursday night when Britney was pictured sitting in a car at a petrol station, wearing glasses and her favoured disguise of a bizarre neon pink bobbed wig - all the while puffing on an unidenitified inhaler, in clear view of watching photographers.

Such odd behaviour has left her friends as mystified as they are concerned. But it says a great deal about Britney's emotional state.

"She's used to people exploiting her," says one of her close confidantes. "She once told me: 'If I cut everyone out of my life who has tried to make a buck off me, I'd have no one.'

"She feels she's been exploited by lovers, assistants, managers, her ex-husband, her parents. Why should Ghalib be any different?

"So, as far as I know, she's still sleeping with the enemy, at least for now. But she can't make rational decisions, anyway. She's too messed up. This girl needs help, badly." A fearful relative agrees: "Actually, it's been this way for months.

"People assume that she's been on illegal drugs and, of course, she has been in the past.

"But most of that stopped months ago when the court ordered frequent drug tests in the child custody case between her and Kevin (Federline, her ex-husband).

"The only drugs she's on right now are certain prescription medications she's taking for extreme anxiety and ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), and that includes Adderall, which is a powerful amphetamine.

"Actually, I think the Adderall is ruining her," continued the family member.

"It makes her manic. But that's the least of her problems.

"What no one in the family wants to admit is that she's probably bi-polar" - a form of manic depression that leads to wild mood swings.

Indeed, I can confirm that Britney was diagnosed as being "suspected bipolar" when she was in Promises rehab in Santa Monica, California, last year.

Doctors there also thought she was suffering from a borderline personality disorder.

However, a final diagnosis couldn't be made without additional tests, which Britney refused to undertake.

The Spears family has been desperately trying to get a conclusive diagnosis. But the problem is, without Britney's cooperation, there's no way to do it.

"And now that she's let it go on too long, she's totally bonkers," said her relative.

"I have actually been with her when she's bashed her head against a wall, trying to hurt herself.

"She needs to be in a hospital, but she won't go. She'll have to be committed. That's the only way."

Now, in desperation, the singer's parents - Jamie and Lynne Spears - along with Kevin Federline, have begun to undertake drastic action to help Britney.

They are considering "a number of different scenarios".

But the most extreme option is for them to go to court and get an order that would force Britney into in-patient treatment.

If that happens, Britney would be forcibly detained by police on a '5150' - a formal charge meaning that she's a danger to herself or others. Then, while she's in a hospital, doctors would appeal to the County Public Guardian, who would go to court and ask for power of attorney.

Britney could then be involuntarily committed to a mental hospital for her own good. Whether or not all of this can be co-ordinated remains to be seen.

But if what took place when police raided Britney's home on January 3 is any indication, she's in desperate need of professional help.

A police source gave me a chilling account of the four-hour stand-off, which began when Britney refused to hand over her children, Sean Preston, two, and Jayden James, 16 months, to Kevin Federline's bodyguards, at the end of her supervised access day.

The court-appointed monitor was able to get Sean Preston outside and into the bodyguard's vehicle.

But by the time she went back in for Jayden James, Britney had locked herself in the bathroom with the toddler.

By 10.45pm police had been summoned, and the stand-off was still going on with the child screaming and crying the whole time.

With Britney still refusing to surrender him, it had soon turned into a hostage situation. Fire engines and ambulances arrived with police helicopters hovering overhead and an army of paparazzi on the ground.

There was a very real fear that Britney would kill Jayden, and then herself. In fact, one source told me that there was a stage when Kevin Federline truly believed that his son was already dead.

But at 11.40pm, the authorities somehow convinced Britney to let them into the bathroom. Once they were with her, they actually had to wrestle Jayden away from her.

The boy was so traumatised, he was immediately taken to Cedars-Sinai Hospital in an ambulance. Paramedics then strapped Britney - who was alternately sobbing and laughing - to a trolley and loaded her into another ambulance.

She was also taken to Cedars, where she was admitted to a mental ward on a 72-hour watch.

In the subsequent Press furore, it was widely reported that Spears had a gun in the house, but I have learned that this is untrue.

"There is no way that anyone who knows Britney would allow her to have a gun during a supervised visit with her children," says a source close to the Spears family.

Nor is it true that her behaviour was the result of a cocktail known as a 'purple monster' - a mix of vodka, NyQuil painkillers and Red Bull, which the star was said to have downed, along with 100 different prescription pills (including Vicodin, Ritalin and sleeping pills).

Paul L. Doering, professor of pharmacy at the University of Florida, says that no person of Britney's height and weight could have survived such a lethal mix. Hospital officials have also confirmed that there were no illegal drugs in Britney's system.

Of course, that does not rule out the possibility that she had taken some combination of mood-altering pharmaceuticals.

Her behaviour in hospital was certainly bizarre, to say the least.

"At times she was very quiet, then other times absolutely frantic," says one of the nurses who attended her.

"Everyone was afraid for her and even of her."

"At one point, she was crying about her sister (16-year-old Jamie Lynn) being pregnant, saying she would now be ruined, too.

"She was railing against her parents for screwing up both her life and her sister's. I mean, she was a real mess.

"Then, 15 minutes later, she would be sound asleep. She'd then wake up feeling very calm and happy. It was all very sad."

Oddly, the nurse also told me that Britney insisted on speaking to the hospital staff using a clipped, British accent (a common symptom, says one psychologist I have spoken to, of a personality disorder).

As the doctors struggled for a formal diagnosis, Britney's parents rushed to her bedside, pleading with her to agree to psychiatric treatment.

But the star would not listen, screaming at her father: "You're not going to lock me up! You can forget it. I'm not going."

A further attempt by psychologist Dr Phil McGraw - who has a popular talk show here in the States - to persuade Britney to seek treatment also backfired horribly.

He barged into her room, at the invitation of her parents, subsequently giving a statement to the media saying: "My meeting with Britney leaves me convinced more than ever that she is in dire need of both medical and psychological intervention."

But it was to no avail. Refusing to recognise that she was ill, the star discharged herself from the hospital, leaving Kevin Federline in such fear of his family's safety that a restraining order has been now placed against her.

She is not allowed anywhere near him, or the children.

This latest twist has left Britney's friends in even greater fear for her sanity.

"The kids are her life," says one of her confidantes.

"She told me that she has no reason to live if she can't see her kids. So, yes, I'm afraid. Very afraid."

And with good reason, it would seem.

"A woman like Ms Spears who has exhibited this kind of frightening behaviour is a likely candidate for suicide," explains one Beverly Hills psychiatrist, who asked to remain anonymous.

"She has isolated herself exactly the way people suffering from this disorder do, cutting everyone out who can help.

"I truly believe she will not live through the year if she's not placed in involuntary mental health treatment.

"All of these incidents, from the photos last year of her baring her crotch to the shearing off of her hair... well, it sounds to me as if she's been living in a world of unreality for a long time."

His comments reminded me of an incident I witnessed three years ago, when Britney was at the height of her fame.

She and I were chatting at a hotel in Los Angeles, when she became panicked by the paparazzi who had gathered outside the building.

"Don't worry, we'll call in the double," said one of her handlers.

And sure enough, within 20 minutes a young woman who was the spitting image of Britney showed up at the hotel.

"Oh, thank God you made it," the star told her. Then the two went into a closet and switched clothing.

As the doppelganger made her exit, we watched from above while photographers went berserk taking the double's picture, setting off in hot pursuit when she left in Britney's car.

"Those dummies. They are so stupid. Look at them!" said Britney, relishing the deception.

"I don't know what I'd do if I actually had to live my own life 24 hours a day. Why, I think I'd go crazy."

And now? Britney's sleeping with one of those "dummies", her life is in tatters and her mind is increasingly unhinged.

Crazy, indeed.

Britney Spears humble beginnings

Hometown museum shows troubled singer's innocent childhood .

Years before her two failed marriages and recent meltdown, Britney Spears was just a normal young girl growing up in small-town America.

While the world watches Britney's steady decline from pop superstardom, a museum in her U.S. hometown has preserved the singer's innocent beginnings.

Britney had a normal upbringing in Kentwood, Louisiana, a small town in the deep south of America renowned for its water with a population of only 2,205.

Born in December 1981 to parents Jamie and Lynne Spears and joining four-year-old brother Bryan, Britney was a born performer and regularly participated in dance and music activities.

Young Britney was a keen gymnast and her sequinned, frilly costumes have been put on show in a reconstruction of the singer's childhood bedroom at the Kentwood Historical and Cultural Arts Museum.

The four-roomed Britney exhibit at the museum was opened after scores of fans began visiting Kentwood to see their idol's humble beginnings.
The rooms include a scale-model of the stage from Britney's 2001 Dream Within A Dream tour, a collection of her numerous awards and a display of photos of Britney with her fans.

The pièce de résistance is the frilly, frou frou near exact replica of Britney's bedroom.

The room includes teddy bears, gymnast costumes and family photos.

In a nod to Britney's four year relationship with Justin Timberlake, the room includes a frame photo of the pop heart-throb and a teddy wearing an 'N Sync jumper, in reference to his former boy band.

Britney started dating Justin in 1998 as she supported 'N Sync on a U.S. tour.

Many of the photos include Britney's late aunt Sandra Covington, who passed away last year after a battle with ovarian cancer.

Some friends claim Sandra's death triggered Britney's stint in rehab last March and her subsequent erratic behaviour.

One photo of a baby Britney with her parents and brother Bryan show how her sons Sean Preston and Jayden James look startlingly similarity to their famous mother.

Britney's parents welcomed a little sister Jamie Lynn in 1991 - who is currently pregnant with her first child - but divorced in 2002 after 27 years of marriage.

The pop star's difficult personal life is appearing to continue on in 2008.

Britney's bizarre behaviour has attracted media attention since she first split from now ex-husband Kevin Federline in November 2006.

Despite spending time in rehab, Britney's troubles appeared to escalate out of control last week when she was stretched out of her California home following a four-hour stand-off with police.

Britney refused to hand her two sons over to ex-husband Kevin, prompting a judge to strip her of her visitation rights.

Britney's custody arrangements with Kevin will be discussed at their next court hearing on January 14.

Sex and the City's Kim Cattrall has often stripped off for her role as the racy Samantha - but in new scenes for the highly-anticipated big screen version she appears to have revealed rather more than she would have liked.

The actress' massive bikini bottoms failed to hide the dimpled truth, as her cellulite was plainly on show while she filmed scenes on the Malibu beach.

As the blonde star strode along the beach, gold stilettos in hand, despite retaining a still enviable figure, her thighs showed the tell-tale signs of the dreaded skin condition which defeats many women.

Kim wore a 50s style black halternecked bikini to film scenes on the deserted beach. And the large tummy-covering pants had more than a hint of the Bridget Jones' about them.

But unlike Bridget's control pants, unfortunately for Kim, they did little to enhance the Sex and the City star's still svelte figure.

But, dreaded cellulite aside, the 51-year-old actress is clearly still in pretty fine fettle.

And fans of the film are expecting plenty of the raunchy scenes that are now associated with her outrageous character, PR woman Samantha.

The film has been dogged by rumours of on-set rows, mainly involving Cattrall and actress Sarah Jessica-Parker.

And in new reports from the US, an insider is set to blow the lid with a behind the scenes memoir.

According to the New York Post, Clifford Streit, the former manager of author Candace Bushnell, is touting a book proposal of the series' early days titled "Unbecoming Stanford."

The book is named after Stanford Blatch, the character who was Carrie Bradshaw's flamboyant gay best friend played by Willie Garson, as it was intended as a caricature of Streit.

Recently, Bushnell and Streit amicably settled a financial dispute over payment from the show.

The book suggests tensions on set began because Kim Cattrall was "a natural comedienne, and a scene-stealer in the best possible sense - the camera went right to her."

Streit also claims two of the show's on-screen lovers had an affair off-screen too.

And that executive producer Darren Star passed on Ashton Kutcher for the show because, he privately confided after a dinner meeting: "I don't see this kid going anywhere."

Simon Cowell's Britney advice

Simon Cowell has urged Britney Spears to "go home to her mother".

The music mogul predicted the troubled singer's fall from grace months ago - after she shaved her head, checked in and out of rehab and became embroiled in a bitter custody battle with ex-husband Kevin Federline - and would have advised her to stay away from her "stupid friends" if he was her manager.

He said: "From where I sit, you could see it coming a long time ago. I said six months ago that she should go home.

"I'd have said, 'Stay with your mother, don't go out with your stupid friends, just live normally.' You'd be amazed - you live normally and suddenly everything becomes normal."

Simon, 48, also would have whisked Britney - who was hospitalised last week after refusing to hand back her children to Kevin - away from the public glare to help get her life back together.

Speaking on holiday in Barbados, he added to Britain's The Sun newspaper: "I would have taken her away somewhere quiet for six months. The problem with Britney is that I don't think there's anyone in her life that she listens to."

The 'X Factor' judge believes the pop star's problems need to be put into perspective when you consider the plight of others in the world.

He said: "I feel bad for Britney. But then I see the real world where people are struggling and you have to temper that with, 'Stop being stupid, go home. Life isn't that bad.' "

Halle Berry's effortless pregnancy

Halle Berry feels less pressure to make an effort for the red carpet now she is pregnant.

The Oscar-winning actress - who is seven months pregnant with her first child - was presented with the Desert Palm Achievement Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival on Saturday night (05.01.08) and revealed it is "liberating" not having to worry about her figure.

Halle confessed to People magazine: "It is true that I am three times the girl I usually am. I have to say there are some really wonderful things that come along with that. This is the first red carpet that I've really walked down where I didn't have to think about holding in my stomach - because I can't.

"It's the first time I've been to an awards show where they served a meal and I actually ate it - the whole thing. I was eating off everybody else's plate and that felt very liberating and good."

The 'Things We Lost in the Fire' star is delighted to be expecting a baby with her boyfriend Gabriel Aubry.

Before she fell pregnant, Halle frequently spoke of her desperation to have a baby, and vowed to get pregnant before she turned 40.

She told US chat show host Oprah Winfrey: "If there's no serious man in my life when I get to that age, whoever I'm dating at the time, I'll say, 'Hey, would you like to have a baby?' "

Halle even contemplated artificial insemination before she started dating Gabriel, 32.

She said last year: "It looks like the only option I have left is to head for the sperm bank! I've been so desperately unlucky in love and that has thwarted my desire for motherhood. It's so frustrating. I really yearn for a child and I can't wait much longer."

And after finding love with the male model - who she met while they shot a Versace advert together in Los Angeles in November 2005 - she said: "Having children is my next big project. I'm planning on becoming pregnant by the end of the year - it's my age, it's only natural.

"If it can't happen naturally, Gabriel and I will adopt."
